Beginner Workshops

Our core programs, Beginner Workshops, are meant specifically for folks who are computer literate but don’t have any past experience with data science. If you’re passionate about criminal justice and eager to spend two days learning new technical skills (like coding!), you’ll be a good fit. We’ll provide the food, caffeine, WiFi, and expert teachers you need.

You’ll spend Day 1 (typically a Saturday) learning about basic data analysis coding and one of the SAO datasets. (We use the industry-standard coding language R – but don’t worry, we start at the very beginning!) On Day 2 (typically a Sunday) you and your group will apply your new technical skills to a research question of your own choosing, and then present your findings to the rest of the Workshop. Before you head home, we’ll share some ideas about where you can go next!

Specialized Workshops

In the future, we plan to launch specialized Workshop events to support groups with more advanced skillsets and/or narrower needs.

Have an idea?

We’re always open to new ideas for criminal justice/data projects! If you have a concept that seems like a good fit for the H4J community, we want to know about it – email us at info@hacking4justice.org.
